The newest advances in computer vision, sensor fusion, and new-age display technologies have brought augmented reality and mixed reality, which has already reached the usability stage.

What is Augmented Reality(AR)?

As the name implies, Augmented Reality or AR enhances our world-perception by overlapping graphics, images, or a collection of interactive data created by computers. AR aims to put digital information into a real-world viewpoint of an individual. The computer-generated contents are superimposed on the physical world so that both can be viewed together instead of shutting down reality as in VR.

An example of AR could be an in-depth view of your lounge that you can virtually enhance using various paint or carpet colors or call up virtual “floating” screens to watch a game or even read an email.

What is Mixed Reality(MR)?

A combination of VR and AR and that aims to deliver the best of the two worlds is mixed reality. The highly interactive feature of MR distinguishes itself, and the practical presentation of the projection applied to our world. We can engage with immersive content by using natural body and finger movements rather than rely solely on remote controls or phone screens. Simply stated, virtual objects can be seen in mixed reality as augmented reality, but they can also interact with the physical world.

For example, it also shows visuals above our environment while using a headset, just like VR, through a translucent view or glass.

Apple and Google clearly lead the way in technology for AR. Today, however, MR favors Microsoft (HoloLens) and Magic Leap i.e., massively funded but only has a concept demo.
